Welcome to Therapy Fort Worth, Nancy Whitehead!

Therapy Fort Worth wants to give a warm welcome to our newest therapist: Nancy Whitehead, MS, LCDC, LPC-A (Supervised by Elizabeth Johnson, LPC-S).

Nancy has 30 years of experience working with a variety of clients, and emphasizes making her clients feel comfortable and understood.

“My goal is to help clients not just cope, but grow — to leave therapy with greater self-understanding, stronger tools, and a clearer sense that they are capable of creating meaningful change in their lives.”

Nancy’s experience covers a range of therapeutic modalities, client populations, and treatment settings. She has worked with clients with depression, anxiety, those navigating addiction, and families, as well as clients across the neurodiversity spectrum, focusing on autism and ADHD (more on this below).

Nancy grew up with a mother on the autism spectrum, so working with neurodiverse individuals instantly resonated with her. “I witnessed firsthand both the strengths and the misunderstandings that often accompany neurodivergence,” she said.

For Nancy, therapy is valuable because it allows people to feel heard and understand themselves better. “It can be empowering to finally put words to what you’ve been feeling and to learn that change is possible,” Nancy said. “In therapy, people develop practical skills for communicating, managing emotions, and navigating relationships with more confidence and clarity.”

Therapy can benefit people with neurodivergence, autism and ADHD

There are multiple ways therapy can be particularly helpful for neurodivergent individuals and those on the autism spectrum — especially with a therapist who has experience and understanding working with these populations.

April is a fitting month to introduce Nancy, given her specific focus and expertise providing therapy with neurodiverse individuals. That’s because April is National Autism Acceptance Month (formerly Autism Awareness Month), with the goal of increasing understanding, promoting inclusion, and celebrating neurodiversity.

“I witnessed firsthand both the strengths and the misunderstandings that often accompany neurodivergence,” she said. “Over time, both personally and professionally, I’ve come to see that neurodivergent perspectives are not only valid — they are vital to innovation, connection, and the way we understand one another.”

According to her experience, therapy can help neurodivergent individuals in many ways, including:

  • building practical social and communication skills

  • strengthening confidence

  • creating strategies for navigating environments like school, work, and relationships

“Many people I work with are highly capable but haven’t been explicitly taught certain social expectations or unwritten rules that others seem to pick up intuitively,” she said. “In therapy, those skills can be learned in a direct, supportive way.

“My goal is not to change who someone is, but to help them better understand their strengths, reduce barriers, and build tools that allow them to succeed in the environments that matter to them.”

Nancy is excited to be a part of Therapy Fort Worth and its mission to make an impact on the wellbeing of the Fort Worth community.

“I want to create a space in the Fort Worth community that feels like wrapping up in a warm blanket—somewhere you can exhale, feel safe, and know you’re truly seen,” she said.

She sees her office as a place where people can be themselves and feel accepted. “From that foundation of safety, my aim is to help each person gain insight, grow, and walk away more equipped to take on life’s challenges with confidence.”
