Step Up Your Self-Care In 2024: 10 Tips

Ten self-care tips and how therapy fits into a comprehensive plan

Self-care is an important part of growth and healing.

Success at anything isn’t about one or two big things you do. It’s about small things you do consistently.

This is especially true with self-care, defined as “taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health.”

You’ve probably been told that you need to consistently eat balanced meals, exercise, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep. (Jump to list of 10 self-care tips.)

But successful self-care also means consistently...

  • Prioritizing the things you value most (relationships, hobbies, etc.)

  • Regularly making time for yourself

  • Tending to your emotional wellbeing

An increasing number of people are making regular counseling sessions part of their comprehensive self-care plan.

A wholistic approach to self-care

The mental, the emotional and the physical are very tightly interwoven, so small things done consistently for your physical health will benefit you mentally. Likewise, regularly tending to your emotional health will boost you physically.

This kind of wholistic approach to self-care gives you the greatest chance to feel your best and reach your fullest potential.

Self-care is not selfish

Furthermore, it's important to understand that self-care is NOT selfish. In fact, taking care of your overall wellbeing is one of the greatest gifts you can give to those who care about you!

It benefits everyone in your life, from your family and friends to the larger community.

…Even complete strangers who you’ll only ever interact with one time!

What is self-care?

The National Institute of Health (NIH) defines self-care as

“taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health.”

When it comes to your mental health,

“self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy.”

Ten Self-Care Tips for 2024

  1. Get regular exercise. Some activity is better than none so try to get moving. Aerobic exercise lasting at least 30 minutes, done 5 times a week is preferable.

  2. Eat a balanced diet at regular meals.

  3. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.

  4. Prioritize your sleep time and stick to a regular schedule. A tired brain doesn’t function the same way as a well-rested brain, and our bodies crave routine.

  5. Make time for yourself. Set aside time for doing things you enjoy, whether that's reading quietly, playing music, creating art or talking to someone you trust. Whatever gives you the space you need to decompress and leaves you feeling energized and renewed, do that consistently.

  6. Include relaxation and mindfulness activities in your routine. This includes practices, such as meditation, breathing exercises and journaling.

  7. Make a list of the tasks you need to get done and assign priorities. This can make you feel more on top of your responsibilities and reduce feeling overwhelmed.

  8. Practice positive mindfulness: Mentally note your successes and accomplishments each day. Challenge negative thoughts which are not constructive. Take the time to be grateful for the good things in your life. Savor and “enrich” those special moments of joy, happiness and fulfillment.

  9. Maintain a healthy social support system by prioritizing the important relationships you have with supportive friends and family.

  10. Consider enlisting the help of a mental health professional in tending to your emotional wellbeing. Regular counseling sessions can be beneficial for your overall health.
